Starting June 25, 2025, the FMCSA will begin enforcing stricter English proficiency rules for all truck drivers. If a driver cannot speak or understand English during a roadside inspection, they can be placed out of service on the spot.
This change rolls back 2016 guidance and includes:
-
A verbal interview conducted in English (no interpreters or apps).
-
A traffic sign recognition test.
Why it matters:
This could lead to capacity disruptions, especially in regions with a high volume of non-English-speaking drivers. Fleets that aren’t prepared may face unexpected delays and delivery issues.
What to do now:
-
Ensure your drivers meet ELP standards.
-
Include English screenings in onboarding.
-
Practice traffic sign recognition in training.
With enforcement going live tomorrow, carriers need to act fast to avoid costly disruptions.
👉 Stay proactive. Stay compliant. Stay moving.
